In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge that we live, work and play on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Stoney Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), and all peoples who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.
Who we are
Iwanski Architecture is the Canadian extension of Iwanski Goebel Architekten, established in Hamburg, Germany in 1997.

The core team of John Iwanski and Elke Goebel have worked together for over 20 years, complementing each others skills, designing projects in Germany, Canada and the USA.
Our European design sensibility permeates all our work - creative, responsive, efficient.
What we offer
Our firm's focus is on educational, cultural, heritage, commercial and residential projects of all sizes - new construction, modernizations, rehabilitations, and renovations.
Our team is creative, experienced and energetic. We approach each opportunity with respect and commitment.
We enjoy collaborating with other members of the design community. Synergy between disciplines nurtures fecundity.
Our services include all phases of the building process from the nascent, initial spark to the follow-up visit after project completion.
What we believe

Good design is healthy, valuable and makes all our lives richer. Good design inspires. Good design stimulates.
The client's contribution is as important to the design process as the design team's input. A collaborative, integrated design approach results in good design that is better than the sum of its parts.

Because each design opportunity is unique, each solution requires its own approach.
John Iwanski, Principal

A graduate of St. Michael's Choir School in Toronto, York University and the University of Waterloo, John's approach to architecture reflects a unique blend of music, contextual understanding and efficiency.
John began his career in architecture in Europe. During his 11 year stay in Hamburg, Germany from 1991 - 2002, John acquired his early experience working at design focused architecture studios. He gained valuable experience in all aspects of the design and construction of residential, commercial and institutional buildings in both Germany and Alberta.
From 1997 to 2002, as the principal design architect in the firm Iwanski Goebel Architekten, John led a team of architects to award-winning results in several international design competitions including the "Konrad Wolf University for Film and Television Art" near Berlin and the Takiron Design Competition, "Sound Corridor for the City" in Tokyo, Japan.
After returning to Canada in 2002, John began working in Calgary as a project architect, focusing primarily on the design of sustainable schools, cultural institutions and governmental projects.

John's passion for detail-focused design, experience in the approvals process, and knowledge of current construction methods allows him to provide leadership in all project phases.
