The Lycée International de Calgary Addition and Modernization project expands and renews this established private French school within a mature residential neighbourhood. The design responds to the surrounding domestic scale while introducing contemporary materials and detailing appropriate for a forward-looking educational environment.
The new addition accommodates the Maternelle program and a consolidated administrative suite. Designed for eight early-learning groups serving children aged three to five, the Maternelle classrooms are organized to maximize natural daylight, generous ceiling heights, and direct access to secure outdoor play areas. An adjacent indoor physical activity space ensures year-round functionality during inclement weather.
The reconfigured administration area establishes a welcoming and efficient front-of-house presence. A modern, open foyer with warm wood cladding creates a clear point of arrival for students, parents, and visitors. The layout supports collaborative work among staff while incorporating dedicated meeting rooms, updated offices, a staff lounge, and a supervised infirmary.
Within the existing building, selective interior renovations enhance the elementary program, including a new classroom with refreshed finishes and upgraded lighting. A newly introduced lightwell brings natural daylight to three previously internalized science laboratories located at the lower level of the two-storey wing, significantly improving the quality of learning spaces.
A future phase will expand the high school program to respond to growing enrollment, introducing additional classrooms and reorganized student areas that promote collaboration and flexible learning.
The project carefully balances the needs of early learners through senior students while accommodating shared community access to the library, gymnasium, and multi-purpose spaces — creating a cohesive, safe, and welcoming educational environment.
